01

The brief

A novelist who wanted a home that felt like a long exhale — warm, lived-in, but not precious. The existing loft was bright, blank, and acoustically harsh.

02

The approach

Acoustics first. Bouclé, drape, a wall of vintage hardbacks doing double duty as sound absorption. Then color: deep cognac and a single bruise-pink accent so nothing read as gendered or themed.

03

The outcome

Three reading zones, one writing desk, no formal living room. Photographed for two regional shelter publications.

The transformation

Before → After

Before
Open-plan loft before — white walls, builder-grade kitchen, no defined zones.
After
Bowery loft after — burnt brass kitchen, bouclé reading nook, vintage hardback wall.
